ABOUT AAUW
Breaking through barriers for women and girls
AAUW, founded in 1881 as the American Association of University
Women, promotes equity for all women and girls, education and self-development over the life-span, and positive societal change.
The
AAUW primary membership organization is a section 501(c)(3) public charity.
The AAUW Action Fund is a smaller section
501(c)(4) social welfare organization that may engage in limited activities related to member activism and voter education.
Membership in AAUW is open to graduates holding an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate, or higher degree from qualified educational
institutions that have full regional or appropriate professional association approval.
An associate degree is a degree awarded
by community colleges, junior colleges, and bachelor's degree-granting colleges and universities in the US and Canada upon the conclusion
of a course of study equivalent to the first two years in a four-year college or university. An associate degree includes associate
of arts (AA), associate of science (AS), associate of applied science (AAS), associate of arts and sciences (AA&S), and associate
of applied arts (AAA … usually in music or commercial art).
The equivalent of an associate degree is an academic degree or diploma
awarded by a qualified institution such as a business college or a hospital which may not be called "associate degree" but has the
same academic requirements or greater. Examples of an equivalent degree are two- or three-year RN diplomas, usually based in a hospital
or community college.
Graduates of certificate programs do not qualify because the course requirements for a certificate are
not equal in academics to those required for the associate degree.
There shall be no barriers to full participation in this
organization on the basis of gender, class, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin or disability.
