ABOUT THE SCOTTSDALE BRANCH

The Scottsdale Branch of AAUW is made up of 150+ members from Scottsdale and outlying communities and is known as one of the most active in the state. Our members span all ages from those who have just completed their Associates' degrees to professional and retired women with advanced degrees, and we are in the process of forming Student Affiliate Groups at ASU and SCC.  We believe in diversity, freedom of opinion, and the absolute right to invest our time, our voices, and our energies in whatever activities and issues interest us. We welcome every woman and we grow by drawing upon fresh ideas and personalities.

Our programs have included "Stepping Up," "Explorathon," "Running and Winning," Finance Seminars, "Adopt-A-Book," and "Build-A-Library".

For information or to obtain a membership application, please contact the Scottsdale Branch Membership Vice President, Carolyn Thompson, at: membership@aauwscottsdale.org

AAUW's Educational Foundation - founded in 1958 - provides the means for deserving and exceptional women to pursue higher education. There are five such recipients working at ASU, the U of A, and American Graduate School of International Management right here in Arizona.

In addition, EF supports innovative community action projects that further AAUW's mission of education and equity for women and girls. AAUW Scottsdale received a $5,000 Community Action Award in 1997 for Explorathon - a non-traditional career day for girls - which celebrated six successful years! Several other branches around Arizona were awarded similar grants, including Sun City West for a Sister-to-Sister program.

In certain respects ALL EF fund-raising efforts are successful because no matter what you do in AAUW you are showing the rest of the world what a great, enthusiastic, and supportive organization we are. We raise the money and send it to Association for investment, and the interest - now amounting to over $2 million a year - is distributed through several grant programs.

EF, however, is not just about raising money. It is about using money to support AAUW's mission, both here in the US and abroad. The impact of an AAUW International Scholarship may be fleeting in the US but endures forever in the mind of the recipient and her community long after she has returned to her country. Likewise, those graduate students awarded Career Development Grants, Selected Profession Grants, or American Fellowship Grants not only benefit personally from this funding but spread the light of that education upon us all.

The Legal Advocacy Fund raises money which is used directly to support women in educational institutions who must initiate legal action against colleges and universities for gender discrimination in hiring, tenure, promotion, or sexual harassment.

Every year members and branches are challenged in many different ways to support EF and LAF through Fund-raising activities like bake sales, author's luncheons, theater parties, book sales, art auctions, raffles, silent auctions, and garage sales. You name it and I am sure someone in some branch has tried it...AND had a lot of fun in the process.
